An iconic Montreal smoked meat restaurant and delicatessen has opened its first western Canadian location in Vancouver. “Dunn’s Famous” is a truly loved Quebec institution founded in 1927 by Myer Dunn. It uses traditional recipes that include unique brine, proprietary light rye sourdough bread and always hand sliced, prepared to order, your-choice-of lean to fat, double A beef brisket that has been smoked for 17 hours and steamed for 3 hours immediately before serving. The first west coast location offers all the Montreal favourites; Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, Reuben’s, poutine, gravy covered hot chicken sandwich as well as new, locally inspired recipes with a Montreal twist. The menu includes favourites like matzoh ball soup, all day breakfast items and a children’s menu but co-General Manager Stuart Heaven thinks the six varieties of poutine will be popular with the late night crowd as well. The Vancouver owners/management team spent months training at Dunn’s Famous in Montreal and Montreal chefs have been in Vancouver training chefs on the fine art of hand slicing the butter tender smoked meat and after a week of dry runs on the 42 item menu the restaurant has opened in the lower lobby of the new Capital 6 building, a building that includes an Orpheum Theatre rehearsal room, studio theatre and music school. Dunn’s Famous Restaurant & Delicatessen is open 7 days a week, 10 am – midnight and 1 am on weekends featuring an all-day menu. "As an ex-Montrealer who grew up near a Jewish area, I've long been acquainted with Jewish staples. Every Montreal smoked meat deli offers lean, medium, fat and extra fat hand-sliced sandwiches. Dunn's Vancouver is the first to do so. I had given up having smoked meat in Vancouver- not anymore. I no longer have to schlepp back a smoked meat brisket from Montreal. Dunn's is here!
