One of the best places, in my
opinion, for a quick satisfying meal on Commercial Drive,
is the Curry Rice Express, located on the northern
end of the Drive. It's a fast food restaurant, similar to
those you would find in mall food courts (except I think
the Curry Rice Express meals are tastier and healthier).
Their current special is a Chicken, Beef, or Vegetarian
Curry with rice, salad, and pita, for $4.00 including tax.
The chicken version is pictured below.

I was fairly impressed that for a mere $4, I could grab a
dish with such a generous portion size, that also
satisfied my rather "un-picky" palate.
Maybe I should explain. While I do appreciate
paying large sums of money for finely prepared food (at
restaurants in trendier parts of town), I'm not averse to
trying different ends of the culinary spectrum. When
something tastes good, I don't always try to question my
senses. Obviously for a meal that costs $4, I have a
different set of critical standards than I would use for a
meal that costs $40.
In the case of the Curry Rice
Express, I noted that the chicken was quite lean and
tender, the salad was fresh, and the rice had a
wonderfully moist, almost sticky texture (which may not be
the traditional or "trendy" way, but agreed with
me fine). There was quite a heat to the curry, which was
not overpowering, but was definitely enough to make me
want to gulp a drink while I was eating.
Other items on the Curry Rice Express menu (which I haven't tried) are
the chicken donair and pop for $4.50, lamb shank for $6.99, and butter
chicken with rice, salad, pita, and tzatziki for $4.50. All very reasonable
prices, making this a great place to visit for a quick satisfying meal if
you aren't too picky!
