For those who have never had bubble tea, it makes a worthwhile experience to try this unique and popular Asian beverage. Bubble tea is a mixture of tea and milk, flavored usually with fruit. The "unusual" ingredients are the "pearls" or "bubbles" which are really marble sized balls of tapioca which you slurp through a fat straw and chew before swallowing. Initially it may seem strange to half eat and half drink your beverage, but once you try it a few times, you will be hooked.
The best deal in town for bubble tea (that I've found) is at Chiclets at Crystal Mall, on the lower floor in the market area. They also serve many varieties of shaved ice - a popular Taiwanese dessert similar to a sno-cone, but topped with specialty Asian ingredients such as sweetened red or green beans, mango, sweetened condensed milk or gelatin pudding.
I often see customers at the small bar slurping at the shaved ice, but I usually go for the bubble tea instead. At Chiclets, they have specials of the day that include market fresh fruit and milk concoctions for only $3.00, including tax and bubbles. In the past they've served grape, mango, papaya, peach and a number of other different seasonal flavors. For me the fresh specials are vastly preferable to the teas made with powdered fruit mixes. With similar fresh fruit tea at other establishments priced at $4.00 and above, your inner Asian will beam with pride at finding such a good deal!
