The cover of the menu at Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House states that they offer "handmade noodles worth going across town for". I must admit that the noodles at this small unassuming noodle house are that good. Enter and you will see tables crowded with Asians slurping down steaming bowls of rich beef broth. The dry noodle bowls are also popular, which include the same handmade noodles with marinated meat and a variety of pickled traditional vegetables.
All noodle bowls can be accompanied by small dishes of Taiwanese style appetizers such as cold garlic marinated Japanese cucumbers (my personal favorite), thousand year old eggs, dried bean curd, or deep fried small smelt fish. Most of the appetizers cost about $2 each. The cold appetizers are the perfect complement to the warm soup, offering variety in temperature and texture. A stop for lunch at Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House makes a comforting escape on a cold, rainy Vancouver day.
