As the quantity of Japanese
restaurant reviews on this site suggests, Vancouver is home
to a large number of Japanese restaurants, and simply
deciding which one to visit can be an endless task. However,
choosing where to eat can be easy if you're willing to be
adventurous. While walking with a friend south on Arbutus, just off Broadway, we came across
the inviting entrance to U- Bento Japanese Restaurant. When we walked in, the
we took notice of the serene, neat interior, and the
friendly apron-clad staff who greeted us.
Since I have special dietary concerns
(a low fibre diet), I always check if I can order straight from the menu or if I have to
make a special request. Upon a quick look at the menu, which
got our appetites ready in anticipation, we ordered two tuna
nigri pieces with no wasabi, a beef teriyaki
with no vegetables or sesame seeds, and a special lunch box "C"
(pictured above).
The tuna appeared first and was quite
fresh with no wasabi present, as requested. The special lunch box appeared next and my friend seemed pleased with the size, flavor and quality of the food.
It was a fairly generous portion and cost just $5.95. The beef
teriyaki arrived last,
and was tasty - the sauce was not too heavy. However I did find a few small pieces of onion that I put to the side. After receiving an email from the owner I was assured that this was an isolated incident and that they do cater to people with special dietary needs.
The prices at U-Bento are
comparable with other Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, with the
beef teriyaki at $6.95, tuna nigri (two pieces) at $2.50 and the
special "lunch box C" at $5.95. Overall the service was good, and the food was
prepared with the high standards of quality that
Vancouverites can expect of sushi restaurants here. We will definitely
visit U-Bento again.
