As a quick look at this site
reveals, the Vancouver area is home to a seemingly endless
number of sushi restaurants, with high standards of quality
at reasonable prices. Sushi Town, located in Burnaby
(on Hastings between Holdom and Kensington), competes very
well by offering especially generous cuts of sushi, featuring
pieces of nigiri sushi with salmon or tuna slices
that are almost twice the length of the rice ball. Once I ordered
their deluxe chirashi don (bowl sushi) - $13.95 -
which had so much seafood that it took ages of eating before
I even discovered the rice layer. Their beef or chicken teriyaki
portion is humungous ($7.95, although I didn't order it
myself, but I observed it arriving at some other tables).
Pictured above is the Assorted Sushi Combo ($10.95) which
came with salmon and tuna rolls, and eight pieces of nigiri
sushi including ebi (prawn), tuna, salmon, ika
(squid), amaebi (shrimp), hokki
(clam), taco (octopus),
and chopped scallop. The rainbow roll (pictured below)
was again very generously prepared for $5.95, and so was the
unagi don (barbecued eel on rice) for $9.95.
In general I have been quite
satisfied with the quality of the preparation and freshness
of the ingredients at Sushi Town. Their thick cuts of
sashimi are satisfyingly easy to eat, although for the one
occasion that I had chirashi don, some of the seafood
had been obviously just thawed, and it didn't seem to come
alive with the intensity that I would have liked. But at these prices, it's
hard to complain about such things as the
"intensity" of the textures! (As the line goes from the movie Lost In Translation, we know that something "with intensity" is a desirable quality in Japan.)
If you're a seafood
lover, definitely give Sushi Town a visit, and you'll likely
be impressed by their down-to-earth generosity.
