As
a former student, I know what it is like to eat on a limited budget. It's
sometimes difficult to get balanced, wholesome meals when away from home. And
it's also true that many students like to stay up very late, so finding food at
those times can also be a challenge. Luckily for SFU students, in Burnaby there
is a restaurant called X-Site Grill and Bistro which solves many of these
student-related dining conundrums. Located two blocks east of Willingdon, X-Site
is only a 15 to 20 minute bus ride west of the SFU Burnaby campus on the 135
bus.
Everything on their menu is under $10, which is
impressive since their menu features items such as New York Peppercorn Steak
($9.95), Blackened Cajun Salmon ($9.95), various pastas, and burgers. What I
like most about X-Site is that their meals are truly balanced, with generous
amounts of all food groups. But it also has a really cool ambience and decor,
with lots of original art-metal sculptures on the walls, subdued lighting, and a
usually young and attractive university crowd who fill up the tables.
Open late (till 1:00am on Monday through
Saturday), X-Site also has some neat-o specials. Monday: steak (top sirloin) for
$4.95, Tuesday: burgers for $4.95, Wednesday: chicken souvlaki for $4.95, and
Thursday: spring salmon for $4.95. And after 10pm, appetizers are 2 for 1. Daily
lunch specials such as chicken souvlaki or fettuccini alfredo go
for $4.95 (every day). They also have drink specials.
X-Site offers very good value for your money. I
highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for a taste of the best of student
life. Note that they close on Sundays and holidays.

Garlic Prawns Sautéed
with garlic butter and white wine. $6.95 These
are an appetizer, very tasty, but not very filling. It's a good dish to
whet your appetite for the main meal, or for a late night snack.

Calamari
With tatziki sauce. Quite a generous
amount of calamari for the price. However, it's nothing fancy, just the
usual battered squid that's deep fried. I've had some really amazing
calamari at Capones in Yaletown, but that cost over twice as
much.
$5.95
