I must admit that I've never been to Germany, but
after eating at Cafe Katzenjammer I am ready to take a vacation there tomorrow!
Finding good German food in Vancouver is rare these days, despite the many
German tourists who visit our city as a gateway to the outstanding hiking and
recreational spaces that British Columbia has to offer. Step into a spotless
dining room adorned with memorabilia of German theatre and comic books, and
you'll think you're stepping into a set of a trendy German film, complete with a
well chosen soundtrack piped in with German lyrics.
Cafe Katzenjammer's menu has a sampling of some
of the more popular and recognizable German dishes, such as schnitzel,
bratwurst, sausages, and German potato pancakes. Or for some comfort on a
cold day, try their goulash which is a traditional Hungarian beef stew
with lots of onions, paprika and potatoes.
With staff who are genuinely hospitable, and an
open kitchen where you can enjoy watching the chefs at work, we found Cafe
Katzenjammer's food to be satisfying in the sense that the flavours spoke of a
land and culture more mature and refined than our typical North American fare.
