I was driving with a
friend along Hastings around
9:30pm, and we were absolutely famished. We decided to stop at the
first
Japanese restaurant we came to, and that happened to be Kato
Japanese and
Chinese Restaurant. Yes, not only does this restaurant serve
Japanese food,
but they also offer an equal number of Chinese dishes. The dish on
their menu that stood out the
most was the "salmon and chicken teriyaki", pictured above. It came on a metal platter that was literally sizzling
and
steaming up a storm, much like how Chinese hot-pot is served. A
bed of bean sprouts was covered in a generous amount of chicken
slathered in a sweet teriyaki sauce. And then the piece de
resistance was
a huge slab of barbecued salmon that was fresh, flaky and tender. The
dish also
came with rice, miso soup, and three pieces of nigiri sushi: salmon,
ebi
(shrimp) and tuna. Price was reasonable, just over $10.
Their salmon and
chicken combination shows that the
chef at Kato has a dash of creativity and flair, which is
remarkable for a
restaurant that is obviously targeted towards budget-minded diners who
likely
order just the standard Chinese and Japanese items. Definitely drop by Kato
if you love salmon and you can't get enough of teriyaki, because their
"salmon and chicken teriyaki" is one
dish that you don't want to miss. Reviewed by: Geoff Peters
