When walking down Davie Street in the evening, it’s hard not to be drawn to the glow of gentle light that is India Bistro. Inside, the restaurant is dimly lit with Indian inspired lanterns, exposed brick pillars, and gentle colourful fabrics that underscore the old-world mood. The owner will usually greet you at door and take care in seating you; touches that will make you feel like a guest rather than a customer.
With the look and feel of high-quality, high-priced dining, it is pleasantly surprising to find only the former is true. With appetizers ranging from $3.95-$10.00, and entrees all in the $8-$12 range, this is a place where you can enjoy authentic cuisine and ambiance without remorse. The Potli Samosas ($3.95), stuffed with potatoes and peas are succulent, accompanied with a rich, flavourful dipping sauce. When ordering entrees, the staff is careful to explain the intensity of spices, so that your food is prepared with a level of zest you are comfortable with. The vegetarian section of the menu is fabulous, offering inventive dishes including Dal Bukhara (black lentils cooked on slow fire with Indian spices, cream and butter $7.95) and Eggplant Bhartha (whole eggplant roasted on open flame, peeled, then cooked with onion, tomatoes, garlic & ginger $8.95).
Always a favourite, the Butter Chicken ($9.95) at Indian Bistro doesn’t disappoint finished with just the right amount of taste. The classic chicken curry ($8.95) and the Murgh Kolhapuri ($9.95) are both prepared with the precise measure of spice. The Tandori Sizzlers are not only delicious, but a spectacle of sound and aroma. India Bistro also offers a selection of Naan Breads (including Garlic Naan $2 and Onion Kulcha $2.50). India Bistro has the atmosphere of special occasion dining, however the menu is so affordable, you can enjoy this place anytime you get the craving for genuine Indian food.
With a great selection of vegetarian dishes and a knowledgeable staff who are keen to please, India Bistro satisfies most dietary needs.
