We
are so fortunate in Vancouver to have access to such a
bounty of fresh ingredients from both sea and land,
matched with skilled and talented chefs. The Dockside
Restaurant on Granville Island adds even more to this
equation, by providing a marvelous waterfront view of
False Creek that can be enjoyed from the heated patio or through the dining room's floor to ceiling windows.
The
beautiful outside setting overlooking the water, with the moon in the background, makes the Dockside one
of Vancouver's most romantic patios. We found the service
to be excellent, from Lucas our attentive server. We
inquired about the restaurant's flexibility in accommodating
special dietary needs, and discovered that they have trained their staff to be aware and courteous towards numerous requests.
My
friend, who has a special dietary concern, ordered the salmon penne with dill and cream sauce,
and requested it without tomatoes and capers. It was a
generous portion of perfectly al-dente pasta that really
showcased the salmon's natural flavor while enhancing it
with the dill and cream sauce. I had the Wood Grilled
Alaskan Black Cod Sauce Vierge (pictured at left), which
was prepared with diced tomato, black olives, herbs,
lemon, and extra virgin olive oil ($27). The cod was
delicate and flaky, reminding me of the not so distant
past when our local waters were swimming with cod, and
when devouring cod was almost a weekly pastime for me. Ah,
sweet memories!
Dockside also has a lounge which can be booked for weddings,
as well as bar that is connected to the Granville Island
Hotel.
If you haven't explored Granville Island, you should.
It's on the south side of the Granville bridge, just
across from downtown. During the day check out the
Granville Island Market which features amazing fresh
produce, bread, seafood, and a unique food court,
frequently enhanced by live entertainers and musicians.
You'll also discover several theatres which have great
live drama and dance shows, including the Arts Club Theatre
(604-687-1644) and the Waterfront Theatre (604-685-1713).
Consider checking out a show after dinner at the
Dockside!
