If
you have a passion for fine food, and you are new to
Vancouver, you will quickly discover that the restaurants
in Vancouver's downtown Yaletown district serve some of the
tastiest, most carefully executed cuisine on the West
Coast. While prices for most dinner entrees in Yaletown
restaurants are in the $20 to $35 range, at lunch time you
can find some extremely good bargains, snatching up a
delightful dish in an upscale restaurant for a mere $10 to
$15. The friendly Hamilton Street Grill, located in
the heart of Yaletown, is a insanely popular steakhouse
among those who consider themselves true connoisseurs of
Vancouver's food scene. Regulars who frequent the Hamilton
Street Grill include some of Vancouver's most ardent food
enthusiasts, and chef/owner Neil Wyles knows many of them
by name.
We visited Hamilton Street
Grill at lunch, and were not disappointed. I had the Wild
B.C. Salmon ($12, pictured at left), which is described
on the menu as "simply grilled with organic greens
and roasted red pepper aioli". Aioli is a light
garlic-infused sauce that is similar to mayonnaise, that
goes very well with vegetables or fish, and the addition of
roasted red pepper was a nice touch. The salmon was
grilled expertly to a nice golden brown, and flaked off
deliciously, while still moist on the inside.
My friend, who has a
special low-fiber dietary need, ordered the Lamb Burger
($10) which was described as "grilled with pesto mayo
and crumbled feta cheese on a Portuguese bun". The
service was courteous and caring towards his request to
order the dish without vegetables. He considers himself a bit of a lamb fanatic, and yet commented that his lamb burger was "done beautifully", which is no small feat!
We will definitely return
to the Hamilton Street Grill to try their dinner menu,
which we've heard features some outstanding steaks. Some
other lunch time dishes which sounded intriguing are the
Mussels Diablo ($10) which are described as served
"with scallions, tomatoes, chipolte peppers and a
touch of cream", or the Black and Blue Ahi Tuna ($10)
served blue rare, "charred in Cajun spices with
wasabi mayo and ponzu sauce".
