Vancouver, B.C. - The Yaletown Distilling Company opens its doors to the public on December 5th, 2013. The distillery is the newest venture of the Mark James Group, and takes up the tradition of in-house craft production and bottling pioneered by the Yaletown Brewing Company. Currently distilling vodka and gin produced with 100% B.C. ingredients, the distillery plans to offer whiskey, grappa, house liqueurs, and eau de vie in the near future. Drawing on his extensive experience, the distillery’s equipment was intentionally designed for the space by Hill in partnership with Bavarian Brewing Technology (bavarianbrewerytech.com). The stainless steel machinery can be observed from the adjacent Distillery Bar, where the distillery’s products are served up in signature cocktails designed by barman Shaun Layton. The Yaletown Distilling Company’s tasting room will be open for samplings 5 days a week. Private tours of the space will be available by appointment. Directly from the Vancouver Gluten Free Expo Press Release:
Vancouver, British Columbia - The annual Vancouver Gluten Free Expo has seen unprecedented growth since the first event was held in 2012.That first year event organizer Margaret Dron expected 500 people and almost 3000 showed up. In 2013 the event moved to a bigger venue to accommodate the expected 5000 attendees and almost 25000 came down.
For the 2014 event, held on January 25 & 26, Dron is confident the trade show will be able to keep its gluten-intolerant guests happy. “We’ve learned so much these last three years,” says Dron, “and we’re more ready than ever to host Vancouver’s gluten-free community. This year, we have doubled the size, doubled the duration, and doubled the fun!” This year the expo will be held at the PNE Forum and will be open to ticket holders for two days instead of one. The decision to extend the event to two days was a no-brainer for the expo, which unfortunately had to turn away patrons last year.
This rise in interest in gluten-free products and events is understandable when you consider the amount of people that are moving to a gluten-free or gluten-reduced lifestyle. The recent Canadian Attitudes to Gluten Free Study, conducted by Udi’s Healthy Foods, estimates that 12.3% of Canadians are reducing their gluten intake with British Columbians leading the trend at 17%.
This year’s Vancouver Gluten Free Expo includes over 60 vendors and promises educational and entertaining speakers to round out the day. Nutritionists, registered dieticians and media personalities like Kathy Smart and Desiree Nielsen will be on site giving cooking demonstrations, and offering invaluable advice and tips for living the gluten-free lifestyle.
Tickets are available online for $12 until January 24, 2014, and for $15 (cash) at the door. Children ages 10 or under get in free and must be supervised by an adult.
For the first time this year, attendees can also download the Gluten Free Expo app from the Apple and Android app stores. The Gluten Free Expo app includes full expo schedules, a list of exhibitors, and floor maps as well as gluten-free recipes and product guides.
The Vancouver Gluten Free Expo is holding a Twitter contest from January 8-10, 2014. To win two tickets to the Expo, make sure you’re following @glutenfreeexpo1 on January 10th for instructions on how to enter.

Hertz is working on bringing The Restaurant at Spirit Ridge, previously Mica, into the Bellstar family and has planned a new menu that makes the most of the resort’s beautiful wine country surroundings.
“The Okanagan is a dream location for a chef to work in,” says Executive Chef Hertz. “I want to celebrate the local produce as much as possible and I can’t wait to meet farmers in the area. Spirit Ridge is closely tied with the Osoyoos Indian Band and I think it’s hugely important to bring that connection to the table. The First Nations people have a respect for the land like no other, so we look forward to celebrating that.”
Ontario-born Chef Hertz studied at Dubrulle Culinary School in Vancouver before working at Vancouver restaurants including Wedgewood Hotel under Chef Frank Dodd, C Restaurant under Chef Robert Clark and Long Beach Lodge in Tofino and Vancouver’s Le Crocodile. At the age of 25 he opened and operated Fusion Bistro in Nelson, BC. The team at Bellstar Hotels & Resorts has an impressive history of hotel and restaurant management experience - President and COO Ralf Strub has over 30 years of international and Canadian hospitality industry experience, working in food and beverage management positions around the world before joining the Bellstar family.

Directly from the Jack Daniel’s Press Release:
JACK DANIEL’S® BRINGS SPECIAL EDITION FRANK SINATRA WHISKEY TO CANADA
The true and timeless relationship between Frank Sinatra and Jack Daniel’s has received a satisfying salute with the Canadian launch of Sinatra Select. Destined to be remembered as one of the finest releases by Jack Daniel’s, this special edition Tennessee Whiskey celebrates a legendary friendship that lasted more than half a century.
The barrels used to make the product were crafted to provide an extra full character and darker rich amber colour by exposing the spirit to extra layers of toasted wood on the inner surface of the barrels. The extra rich barrels were mingled with classic Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey and bottled at 90 proof resulting in a character that is full of oak and spice notes with an exceedingly smooth vanilla finish. The smooth, bold character of the whiskey is meant to embody the smooth, bold character of Sinatra himself.
Sinatra Select honours Frank Sinatra’s loyalty to Jack Daniel’s. Look on stage any given night and you would see Frank Sinatra, in his trademark tuxedo, captivating audiences everywhere. Look a little closer and his favourite drink, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, wouldn’t be far away.
“Dad would be very flattered by the association. This fine Tennessee Whiskey, or Old No. 7 as he referred to it, was a favourite part of my father’s life and he loved both sharing it with his friends and introducing it to new acquaintances,” said Frank Sinatra Jr. “I’m very pleased to continue to be a part of the Jack Daniel’s family and feel the introduction of Sinatra Select is an appropriate tribute as we near my father’s 100th birthday in 2015.”
The classic, black Sinatra Select bottle depicts flashes of orange, said to be a favourite colour of Sinatra’s. Packaged in a sleek, limited edition box, Frank Sinatra’s signature and iconic fedora hat are found on the bottle, along with the Jack Daniel’s Country Club logo, designed by ‘Ol Blue Eyes himself. Also enclosed is a booklet telling the captivating story of the legendary relationship between Jack Daniel’s and Frank Sinatra.
Independent in character, with an appealing smoothness, it is no surprise Frank Sinatra found a friend in Jack - a relationship that Jack Daniel’s will be extending to whiskey lovers in Canada beginning November. Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select is being launched with a very limited release – in select stores in various provinces across Canada including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. Retail price varies from province to province, but is averaging $299 per bottle. For more information, visit http://www.jackdaniels.com. For more information, please visit www.jackdaniels.com. Must be legal drinking age to enter website. Maturity isn’t just about whiskey. Please enjoy responsibly.
