Winterruption on Granville Island

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Directly from the Press Release:

Celebrate the Art of Winter on Granville Island
Fourth Annual Winterruption Festival
February 19-22

Vancouver, BC (January 21, 2009): Granville Island and Coastal Jazz and Blues Society present the fourth annual Winterruption Festival, February 19-22. The cultural festival celebrates the West Coast through music, theatre, film, visual arts, dance, literature, food, wine and BC artisans. Winterruption is the ideal way to interrupt the snow-shoveling, rubber-boot-wearing, umbrella-toting winter Vancouverites have experienced so far this season.

From jazz to world music and vocal expressions, the sounds at Winterruption 2009 are diverse and compelling. World renowned artists like Juno award-winning Toronto saxophonist/flutist Jane Bunnett & The Spirits of Havana, Australian cult band The Necks, British jazz vocalist Norma Winstone, Quebec bands Les Projectionnistes and L’Orkestre Des Pas Perdu, and award-winning Vancouver bassist Jodi Proznick and her Quartet are among the featured performers.

Reaching an audience of more than 65,000 people, the festival uses over a dozen venues across Granville Island to stage world-class performances - further bringing the Island to life with colourful street performers, roving characters, face painters and buskers. This is an incredibly accessible festival with most of Winterruption’s 100 performances and events free of charge.

New this year:

- Spoken World: Presented by the Vancouver International Writers Festival, Spoken Word artists from three continents will be at Performance Works for two performances;
- Three new puppet shows: The Little Old Man, presented by Theatre Bagger, Pesciolino (The Little Fish), presented by Bella Luna, and Maita, presented by The Cultch, will delight the young and young-at-heart;
- Toxique Trottoir: The street performance troupe will invade the New Festival Garage with provocative and interactive shows;
- Celebrating Wine and Culinary Arts: Liberty Wine Merchants explore the dynamics of food and wine pairings in the Granville Island Public Market.

Returning by popular demand:

- Arts Umbrella celebrates 30 years of inspiring children through high-quality arts education. Visit their Open House and enjoy a performance by Arts Umbrella’s Senior Dance Company;
- Artists and Artisan Studio Walking Tours: Meet the artists and watch them create their work;
- Vancouver TheatreSports League: Gather for afternoon improv laughs in the New Festival Garage, as well as their regular evening line-up;
- Firebelly is back with Spark: Fire and aerial performance that will transform the dark February skies;
- Coastal Jazz and Blues Society will once again wow the crowds with a full program of Jazz and World Music.

…and so much more. Visit www.winterruption.com for full program details or call Granville Island information at (604) 666-5784.

Directly from the Press Release:

This mother-daughter foodie duo will entice your taste buds and your mind as we find out why we like and dislike certain foods and what it says about you.
Through a series of portraits, Reiss introduces us to a community of Mexican Migrant workers, elderly rice farmers from a Japanese mountain village and famous Canadians in the Arts tantalizing us visually through art on canvas and gastronomically through a culinary pallet.
Find out how perception can change essence as Garten guides us through cuisine and context and how food has grown into a culture of its own.
The event takes the participants on a journey through food culture over time and space, from the personal to the societal, through painting and tasting… and dressing in the garb of other cultures.
Last year’s Winterlicious event by Garten and Reiss “The Neuroscience of Molecular Gastronomy”, a phenomenal multi sensory experience of the intersection of food, art and science, sold out at over 150 seats. The pair are masters of multi-disciplinary exploration, leading their audience to widen their realm of sensory perception.

Araxi Restaurant News

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Directly from the Araxi Press Release:

James Walt returns to Stratford Chefs School as Celebrity Chef

Whistler, B.C. - Eighteen years after his graduation, Araxi executive chef James Walt will soon return to Ontario’s Stratford Chefs School, one of Canada’s foremost culinary institutes.

Celebrated by his alma mater as a visiting ‘celebrity chef’, James has designed a multi-course menu to represent his signature regional cuisine based on British Columbia’s finest ingredients–Pemberton Meadows beef, Qualicum Beach scallops, Albacore tuna and Agassiz hazelnuts, to name a few.

Over two sold-out dinners on February 9th and 10th, chef Walt will offer insight gained from his impressive culinary career spanning British Columbia’s leading restaurants and his appointment as executive chef to The Canadian Embassy in Rome.

As an integral component of the Chefs School’s curriculum, noted chefs are regularly invited to participate in the ‘Celebrity Chefs Program’ for Level 2 apprentices.

Chef Walt commented, “My career has greatly benefited from working alongside some very talented chefs in real life environments. This is an opportunity for me to give back as a mentor.”

In keeping with this philosophy, James was recently appointed to the board of the Chefs Table Society of British Columbia, which assists the training of apprentices and emergent chefs across the province. In addition to authoring Araxi’s forthcoming cookbook, he is also a contributor to Vancouver Cooks 2.0. Both cookbooks will be published this autumn by Douglas & McIntyre.
